Today’s topic: Overreliance on a Few Top Performers — Building a Team That Outperforms the Superstar

Why it matters:
Many companies think they’re safe because they have one or two closers who always deliver. The truth is, when your forecast rides on a few hero performers, you’re building your revenue on quicksand. If they stall, leave, or start calling the shots, your pipeline collapses and your precious gold suddenly becomes lead.

The real problem:
The extreme value of your top performers is also your biggest risk if they make up too much of your total sales. There are countless ways you can lose one or more of them: burnout, illness, a better offer, or just losing their edge. When that happens, you’re left counting on underachievers to make up the difference. You and I both know that won’t happen. You are at risk.

The fix:
My experience proves it’s a myth to think you can leave your best people alone while you spend all your time on underachievers. Top performers are like high-yield stocks, they’ll keep paying off as long as you give them the support they need to stay at their best. Underachievers will drain your time and energy just to get to good enough. That doesn’t mean you ignore them. If they have real potential, you need a clear plan to lift them up. The more people you develop into overachievers, the less risk you carry, and the more predictable your revenue becomes.
