Today’s topic: Strong Sales Leadership Builds Morale and Keeps Your Best People
Why it matters:
Sales is one of the rare jobs where rejection happens every day. That is the major reason many people decide sales is not the profession for them. The greatest athletes and teams of all time do not dwell on the last bad play or game. They move on and focus on the next one. That does not mean they ignore mistakes. It means they set them aside to review, analyze, and plan improvements at the right time. They do this between games or during breaks like halftime or between quarters. They are always focused on getting better, even when they win. These top players are human. They can get worn down too. That is when leadership must be at its best. The same is true for any sales organization.
The real problem:
As the sales leader, your job is to recognize mood shifts and other signs that your salespeople are struggling. You need to ask high-impact questions to find the real cause. You need to know what is needed for a turnaround. This does not mean you have to be overly sweet. That will not help anyone. You must be honest and direct. You show your support by giving clear guidance on how to fix the situation. You give clear, specific, and measurable action steps so there are solid ways to track progress.
The fix:
Supporting salespeople in the field and in the office was one of my greatest strengths as a sales leader. It was not always easy or fun for either of us. But it worked. My retention rate proved it. I had one stretch where, in fifteen years, I only lost one salesperson to another company.
BeenThere Edge:
If you want to build a strong, loyal customer base, keep the same salesperson in front of the customer for decades. That starts with leadership that keeps morale high.
