The planet was Earth. The year was 2026. Frank had not been feeling well, so he made an appointment with Judy, the sales doctor. She had treated him before, but his symptoms were getting worse. |
|
|
A Visit to the Sales Doctor Frank explained that he was tired, anxious, and discouraged. Every delayed decision, unanswered call, or lost opportunity made him feel worse. Judy began asking questions. How much business did Frank need to close? How many qualified sales opportunities was he pursuing? How many new opportunities was he adding to his sales pipeline each week? Frank became increasingly uncomfortable as he answered. Judy reviewed her notes, removed her glasses, and looked directly at him. “Frank, you are severely underweight. You need to put on at least five times the weight you have today. That is the only way you are going to become healthy.” Judy wrote a treatment plan requiring Frank to identify prospects, earn meetings, qualify opportunities, and follow through. She also scheduled accountability meetings to review his progress. “Frank,” Judy explained, “getting healthy is one thing. Staying healthy requires accountability.” Frank finally felt as though his condition could be treated. |

Welcome to the World of Sales Could you imagine your medical doctor giving you the same diagnosis and direction? What kind of bizarro world would that be? This is not a bizarro world. This is the world of sales, where being underweight can be dangerous and gaining more weight can help you become healthy. Judy was talking about Frank’s sales opportunity pipeline. I was recently asked why salespeople fail, and one major reason is an underweight pipeline. Nobody closes 100% of the opportunities they pursue. I would argue that it is rare for someone to close even 50% of every opportunity they are working while consistently achieving their targets. A significant percentage of the opportunities in your sales pipeline will never become closed business. Without enough qualified sales opportunities to absorb those losses, your success depends on nearly everything going according to plan. That is not a sales strategy. It is a dangerous gamble. |

Not Every Lost Opportunity Is Preventable When salespeople fail to close an opportunity, it does not always mean they handled it poorly. Budgets are cut, priorities change, decision-makers leave, projects are delayed, companies are acquired, and businesses close. Just today, as I am writing this article, I learned about two businesses that closed over the weekend. Imagine having submitted a quote or proposal to one of them. An opportunity you felt confident about could suddenly disappear through no fault of your own. You cannot eliminate every risk, but effective sales pipeline management prevents your success from depending on too few opportunities. Stronger pipeline coverage prepares you for opportunities that stall or disappear |

The Five-Times Pipeline Guideline The practical protection is to maintain considerably more opportunities than you need to close. A healthy guideline is to have approximately five times your sales target or quota in top-line opportunities for the period you are forecasting. Suppose you have a $10,000 quarterly sales target. You should have approximately $50,000 in total sales opportunities in your pipeline. That figure represents the full value of the opportunities you are pursuing, whether their probability is 10%, 50%, 70%, or greater. This is the 80-20 principle applied to pipeline development. You need enough total pipeline weight to compensate for the opportunities that will stall, lose funding, select another provider, or disappear. The five-times guideline is not a guarantee. It is a practical benchmark that improves your chances of achieving your target without becoming overly dependent on one or two opportunities. |

A Healthy Sales Pipeline Requires a Plan Growing your sales opportunity pipeline requires more than deciding that you need additional prospects. Sustainable pipeline development depends on skills, deliberate activity, and accountability working together. You need to identify the right prospects, earn meetings, ask effective questions, create value, qualify opportunities, handle objections, and maintain meaningful communication. Each of these activities adds necessary weight to your pipeline. You also need to decide when and how those activities will happen. Waiting until your pipeline is dangerously thin creates desperation, which can affect how you communicate, negotiate, and make decisions. I help businesses and individual contributors strengthen their skills and build deliberate action plans that create more qualified sales opportunities. A healthier pipeline provides greater control, greater confidence, and a stronger foundation for consistent sales success. |

Start Building a Healthier Sales Pipeline If your opportunity pipeline is underweight, hoping that every current opportunity will close is not a strategy. You need a deliberate plan for consistently identifying, creating, qualifying, and advancing more sales opportunities. To discuss how I can help you or your business strengthen pipeline development, email Phil Whitebloom or request a meeting with Phil. A healthier pipeline begins with a plan, consistent action, and accountability. |
